BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Melinda Ford, D.O.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD?
I have worked in addiction for many years and have a passion for helping those with addiction to get clean and rebuild their lives. When it was suggested to me that I could apply for the OPHP board, I realized that being on the board I could help medical professionals in their recovery as well.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A PHYSICIAN?
Getting to know my patients. I get to rejoice with them when things go well and mourn their losses with them when they don't. It is a very unique and special bond to have with so many people. I am honored to be a part of their lives in this manner.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Riding roller coasters (my husband and I are card carrying members of American Coaster Enthusiasts [ACE]) watching hockey, doing Crossfit.
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I carried the Olympic Torch during the torch relay for the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. I still have the torch, it is displayed in my study.
WHAT IS AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW?
That being a family practice physician we have been trained to deliver babies and care for patients from birth until death.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES OPHP SPECIAL?
OPHP is dedicated to supporting and assisting medical professionals to be as healthy as they can be. Not only do we oversee treatment, but are expanding into wellness programs too. I think it is very unique that we are not only working on treatment, but also prevention of burnout, addiction, mental health problems etc.
HOW HAS OPHP IMPACTED YOUR WORK AND/OR WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BENEFIT FROM YOUR INVOLVEMENT?
My favorite part of being on the board has been meeting other like-minded professionals from around the state. I also enjoy increasing awareness about OPHP to make sure that those in need know where to turn for help.
